MOTIONS FOR DEBATE ~ MUNA Central Coast, 2010 -
LINDA McLEAN MEMORIAL PEACE MOTION
Introduction
All MUNA teams will be asked to speak to the peace motion below. Each team is asked to put forward and argue its respective nation’s position giving consideration to the nation’s main security issues and current involvement in peace keeping and international activities. Teams can argue against positions adopted by other nations.
The General Assembly
Recognising the key purpose of the United Nations is to maintain international peace and security
Regards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as fundamental to securing international peace and security
Expresses concern that based on current progress the goals may not be met by 2015
Calls upon all nations to prioritise resources to achieve the MDGs over all other UN peace and security programs such as nuclear disarmament, anti terrorism, people smuggling and drug trafficking.
Additional Information
The Charter of the United Nations was signed on 26 June 1945. Article 1 of the Charter (in brief) states that the first purpose of the United Nations is to maintain international peace and security.
The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were developed in 2000 and adopted by 189 nations. The MDGs represent an agreed agenda for both developing and developed countries, working together in partnership, to reduce poverty and advance human development in a range of critical areas by 2015. For more information see http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/bkgd.shtml
Although the MDGs have become a key international mechanism for development planning and measuring effectiveness of aid, this peace motion investigates the importance of the MDGs to achieving the key purpose of the United Nations, namely “to maintain international peace and security”
There might not be time to permit all motions to be debated and therefore the delegates present will decide the order in which these motions to be debated.
